The shutdown confirms that we are on our own

The GOP plays hardball. Redistricting in the middle of a decade to rig the midterm election shows their desperation and willingness to cheat. We deserve better.
Coming to terms with the reality that our government is woefully corrupt and incompetent is painful, but the evidence is irrefutable.
Even if you feel safe, this is a dangerous moment when the president and Congress willingly shut the government down. Although it appears that Democrats are backed into a corner, negotiating with terrorists is never a winning strategy. The Democrats must not cave to the extortionary demands of the GOP. We can win this, but it won’t be easy. The suffering will become increasingly acute as more people are fired and laid off.
I have more confidence in my fellow Americans, including immigrants, than I have in our MAGA brethren. The mainstream press, especially Fox News, is not telling the truth. The legacy media, such as the Washington Post and the New York Times, do not give us the straight story either. Too many of us are gullible. Elon Musk and Donald Trump duped many people on the Waste, Fraud, and Abuse claim that was itself fraudulent, unsupported by actual evidence.
Being a member of the Lake Street Church inoculates me from some of the despair and greif that I feel for the world and all of us. We walk the talk. We’re not large but mighty, with a strong commitment to social justice and a new tradition of small groups that meet twice monthly for intimate sharing. My small group has become trusted and treasured friends. Ninety percent of my friends are Lake Streeters.
My point is that we need a community to bolster us, especially since we can’t count on the government or even law enforcement. The good news is that we can create highly functional, responsive communities at home. My mission is to nurture the conditions for harmonious households to form. Our goal is to create households in which people are accepted and supported. With the right people, this is possible.
Banding together with camaraderie and resilience is our lifeline, whether you are alone or not. Living in a community that accepts and values you is a comfort and is possible
